Huckleberries Aplenty

The Green abounds with plenty to snack on - not the least of which are an assortment of Northwest berries. One of the less recognized treats (largely because people are afraid that all little spherical red berries are toxic) is the red huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium). I've spent many a summer wandering trails and living on huckleberries and blueberries. And I'm not alone - they have been eaten for 1000's of years by indigenous people who lived in Cascadia, and are loved by birds and mammals alike. One source states they are a favorite food of the mountain beaver....hmmmm....
